Bloomingdale Trail Tour

May 13, 2015

Bloomingdale Trail

We seized an opportunity to take advantage of the warm weather and visited our field staff at The 606, the Bloomingdale Trail Project where we were treated to a tour of the trail. The trail, which was once old Canadian Pacific railroad tracks that carried freight cars, is close to being completely transformed into a park. On our tour we learned about unique drainage considerations that had to be made for the project, the story behind the absence of toilets, the trail's many mixed-use opportunities, the special layer cake soil to eliminate erosion, park security, and a potential phenology study.

The highly anticipated rails-to-trails project runs along Bloomingdale Avenue from Ashland to the east to Ridgeway to the west. And the 3 mile path slices through Bucktown, Wicker Park, Logan Square and Humboldt Park. Ribbon cutting at each of the on/off ramps and all day celebration events are slated along the trail on June 6th, 6-06, to mark the opening day of the trail.
