Project scope encompassed the rehabilitation of mainline and ramp pavements, eight mainline bridges and thirteen crossroad bridges on I-88 between Washington Street and York Road in DuPage County, Illinois. Work included HMA surface removal and replacing with binder and surface course; removal and replacement of concrete, sidewalks, detector loop replacement, and striping with thermo-plastic pavement marking; bridge deck expansion joints removal and replacement, deck slab repair, and sub-structure repairs with shotcrete.
The scope of bridge rehabilitation started with the removal and replacement of bridge decks and beams. Superstructures, including the approach and transition slabs, bearings, abutment wingwalls and piers were rehabilitated or reconstructed as necessary. New semi-integral abutments were built while structural concrete repairs were completed for deteriorated super-and substructures, including slope walls and PCC beams.
Roadside safety improvements consisted of the installation of guardrail, a high-tension cable median barrier, and median pier protection. Pavement markings, delineators and signage, lighting upgrades, maintenance of traffic control operations, and all other related items were also included. Temporary lighting as well as landscape and soil erosion and sedimentation control measures were installed throughout the project. Additional work also included new drainage structures, culvert repairs, and underdrain installations, as well as ditch grading improvements and modifications to existing systems.
